Information

Salim Haddad, born in 1983 in Kuwait, is an author and aid worker of Iraqi-German-Palestinian-Lebanese origin. He became famous after his novel was published in 2016 under the title, Answer.

Salim Haddad was born in Kuwait City in 1983, but his ancestry goes back to the Lebanese-Palestinian race, while his father comes from Iraq and his mother is from Germany. He was educated in Jordan, Canada and then the United Kingdom.

Haddad's novel was published in March of 2016 with the participation of another journalist. The book tells the story of a gay man who lives in an unnamed Arab country and tries to make a life for himself in the midst of political and religious turmoil. Haddad's fame increased after he published this novel, which spread all over the world, until the New Yorker described it as "a vibrant and painful novel at the same time." As for Haddad, he focuses on post-colonial theory and is concerned with the upheavals that came after the revolution and so on. His interests made him - as he put it - live in a state of dispersion, so he tried to create something wonderful embodied in that novel.

As part of the London Festival of Literature, Haddad was awarded the 2017 Polari Prize. The award is given annually to a writer who explores and speaks about homosexuality, whether through poetry and prose, fiction or non-fiction.

Other business
Haddad worked with Slate magazine, and also worked as an aid worker with Doctors Without Borders and other organizations in Yemen, Syria and Iraq. He currently lives in London with his partner.
