  EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

  Research Experience

May, 1987 - June, 2007 Senior Research Scientist

Nov., 1982 - May, 1987Research Scientist

Defence Science and Technology OrganisationAeronautical and Maritime Research LaboratoryAirframes and Engines Division
Melbourne - Australia.

Experience gained in this period as a member of the propulsion aerodynamics group, included work on high pressure ratio thrust augmenting  ejectors, confined jet mixing, aerodynamics of aircraft-engine run-up facilities, and aerodynamics of aircraft turbojet engine air intake duct.
My experimental investigation into the unsteady entrainment phenomena in relatively high pressure ratio thrust augmenting ejectors provided a valuable understanding of the complex acoustic interaction between a supersonic jet and a confining duct which is important to several aspects of jet mixing and entrainment such those occurring in ram rocket combustion chambers. The role of natural duct resonance in jet mixing has been identified, and correlations between initial jet conditions and ejector geometries have been developed. The discrete tone emission from both free and confined supersonic jets, and the effect of duct resonance on confined jet mixing in this high pressure application is beyond the experience of previous investigators. Refs (18, 19, 20, 22, 23, & 24)

Tests with unheated helium supersonic jets were carried out to help gain an understanding of the temperature effects by simulating the density differences between the core flow from a rocket motor and the co-flowing secondary air in the ejector duct. These confirmed the results of the actual rocket firing tests. These are yet to be published.

I have also performed an assessment study for multistage ejectors. This threw new light on the characteristics of these devices, and provided guidance as to their potential for practical applications. Refs (17, 21)

During this period I was also engaged in two major investigations of the aerodynamics of aircraft-engine ground run-up facilities upon request from RAAF.  The first was to solve some operational problems by modifying an existing facility, and to assess a proposed design for the second. Both investigations were carried out with model scale testing in wind tunnel and with aircraft exhaust jet and propeller simulation. I was responsible as task manager and principle investigator to plan and supervise full scale aircraft tests in the facility, conduct or negotiate contract wind tunnel model testing of the facility. This required extensive liaison with RAAF personnel, commercial industrial and testing consultants. Refs (25, 26, 27,  28, and 29)

I was also responsible for the model scale development of an auxiliary intake system for an aircraft turbojet engine. This auxiliary system is to be only deployed during aircraft take-off and would be closed in flight. The program involved both static and tests with forward speed in the wind tunnel. Results of these test have shown that significant improvements in pressure recovery can be achieved without serious penalty in  distortion levels at the engine face. Refs (30, 31, and 32).

Aug., 1978 - Oct., 1982 Research and Development Engineer.
James Howden Australia Pty. Ltd.
Sydney, Australia

More than four years R & D experience in the field of gas cleaning and air handling in mining and power generation industries in Australia. Responsibilities included planning, model design and supervision of its building, and conducting flow model testing of the equipment such as dust collection hoppers, flow straightening devices, and industrial fans. My contributions in this field are currently in use in three major power stations in Australia (Eraring, Bayswater and Mt. Piper).

During this period I have made several contributions to the low speed industrial axial flow fan design and technology. My major R & D achievement in this field was the development of a stabilising device which proved to be capable of eliminating the stall margin from any axial and mixed flow fan operation. Refs (11, 12, 13, 14, and 15). This fan stall alleviation device was patented world wide and is currently in use in several power stations in Australia.

1973 - 1978 Postgraduate Research Student
(Ph.D) 1978    The University of Sydney.
 (M.Eng.Sc.)1976    The University of Sydney.
