Information

The American University of Beirut, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of History and Archaeology regretfully announce the death of Professor Emeritus Nicola Ziadeh, who died at the age of 99 on July 27, 2006, in Beirut.

Professor Ziadeh taught history at AUB from 1949 to 1973, during which time he also taught at a number of other universities in the United States and India as a visiting professor. His love of teaching was so deep that when he was first employed at a village school in Acre, Palestine, in 1924, he did not mind walking for hours to reach the classroom. From these humble beginnings, Professor Ziadeh went on to devote himself to education and scholarship for more than seventy-five years.

A specialist in the history of Syria and North Africa, Professor Ziadeh was lively and informal in the classroom, a teacher who made his subject come alive for his students. "When we studied Libya," said one, "we traveled to North Africa with him."

Even after his retirement, Professor Ziadeh continued to teach, taking up posts in Nigeria at Zaria and Kano Universities in 1976, and in Lebanon at St. Joseph University from 1973 to 1977 and at the Lebanese University from 1974 to 1976 and from 1978 to 1981.

Editor of Longman's Arab Background Series from 1969 to 1990, Professor Ziadeh published more than forty books in Arabic, dealing with Arabic-Islamic civilization and culture. The first of these works, Travelers in the Arab East in the Middle Ages, was published in Cairo in 1943; the most recent, Christianity and the Arabs, came out in Damascus this year. He also translated a number of historical works from English into Arabic, including Toynbee's Mother Earth, and at least one work from German.

Over the years, Professor Ziadeh presented almost 150 academic articles and papers at various conferences, published hundreds of short articles and book reviews, and between 1947 and 2000 delivered almost two thousand short broadcasts (for the BBC and other networks) in Arabic on a variety of historical subjects.

Professor Ziadeh was a member of several academic societies, among them the American Oriental Society, the American Medieval Society, and the Iraqi Academic Society. He was also an honorary member of the German Oriental Society.

On the occasion of his ninetieth birthday in 1997, his children, both AUB graduates, announced the establishment of the Nicola Ziadeh Endowed Scholarship Fund to be awarded annually to a graduate student of the AUB History Department.

Born in Damascus in 1907, Ziadeh is survived by his two sons, Raed and Bassem, who live in London. A funeral service was held on Friday, July 28, at the Orthodox Church of Our Lady of Lament on Makhoul Street.
