The Palestinian diplomat Zuhdi Labib Suleiman al-Tarazi was born in the city of Jerusalem in the year 1926. He left the city in the mid-fifties, moving between many countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, and South America, which created a good knowledge of the countries and a network of relationships that he succeeded in investing in diplomatic work later.
In 1964, Al-Tarzi contributed to the founding of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and its president, Ahmed Al-Shugairi, assigned him to represent the organization in Brazil.
Yasser Arafat was also impressed by his abilities, so he was appointed as the organization’s representative in Spain and Latin America. When the PLO was invited to take its place in the United Nations as an observer member in 1974, he was assigned the task of the organization’s representative to the United Nations.
Zuhdi Al-Tarazi became prominent in diplomatic work in many forums alongside the United Nations. During the period he served at the United Nations between 1974 and 1989, he worked to consolidate the foundations of the idea of international legitimacy and its decisions. Al-Tarzi and those working with him in the PLO mission in New York contributed to promoting this term and making it a part of From the international movement towards the Palestinian issue.
At the end of the seventies, a handshake between him and the American delegate Andrew Young caused the latter’s resignation, as a result of the Zionist lobby’s pressure on the American presidency, considering that Al-Tarzi represented the PLO, the enemy of Israel.
Al-Tarazi served as a member of the National and Central Councils. In 1989, he was appointed as an advisor to President Yasser Arafat.
He died in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on 3/1/2006.
