Information

Zuhdi Tarazi (February 20, 1924 [2] in Jerusalem - March 1, 2006 [2] in Amman ) is a politician and diplomat from Palestine . [3] [4] [5] He served as the first Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations from 1974 to 1991. [3]
Growing up and educational attainment [ edit ]
Terzi, named Knight of the Holy Sepulcher by the Patriarch of Jerusalem , was born to Orthodox parents in Jerusalem during the British Mandate of Palestine . [3] He attended Terra Santa College and graduated with a law degree in 1948 from the Institute of Law in Jerusalem . [3] [6]
Ambassador to the United Nations [ edit ]
Terzi was the first Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations as a permanent observer, and served in the position from 1974 to 1991. [4] [5] Terzi stood against US attempts to close the mission, and after the declaration of Palestinian independence in Algeria in 1988, Terzi’s role changed from representing the organization Palestinian Liberation to represent the State of Palestine . [4]
In 1985, the US State Department refused to allow Tarazi to enter the United States for a discussion with Alan Dershowitz , a professor at Harvard University . [7]
As a result, Harvard Law School filed suit against Secretary of State George Shultz to allow Tarazi to enter the United States . [7]
Judge Walter Skinner , a U.S. District Court judge in Massachusetts , overturned the Secretary of State's decision and allowed Tarzi to enter the United States , in order to bar Tarzi's entry into the United States and prohibit political speech protected under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution . [7]
Death [ edit ]
He died on March 1, 2006.
