Hassan Abu Libdeh (November 8, 1954 in Araba - ) is a Palestinian statistician and politician, who founded in 1993 the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. He held the portfolios of the Ministries of Social Development, Labor and National Economy in the successive Palestinian National Authority governments.

 

Upbringing and educational attainment

Hassan Abu Libdeh was born in the town of Araba in the Jenin governorate in the northern West Bank in 1954. He received his school education in the town. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Birzeit University in 1979, and his master's degree. in Mathematical Statistics at Stanford University in 1981. Abu Libdeh again later earned a master's degree in applied statistics in 1986 and a doctorate in biostatistics in 1988 from Cornell University. He worked as an assistant professor at Birzeit University from 1988 to 1991.

Abu Libdeh established the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics in 1993, becoming its first director. During his tenure, the first official Palestinian census of population, housing and establishments was conducted in 1997, which he described as “the importance of the intifada.” He held the position of Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, and in addition to this, he held several ministerial portfolios, as he was Minister of Social Development and Labor in the lineup of the ninth Palestinian government 2005-2006 and Minister of National Economy in the lineup of the twelfth Palestinian government 2009-2012.

 

Abu Libdeh also served as Deputy Director of the Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction (PECDAR) and twice as Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers. He also served as CEO of the Palestine Investment Conference in 2008.

 

In 2009, he won the elections for the Palestinian Revolutionary Council held during the Sixth Fatah Conference in Bethlehem and became a member of it.

 

On November 29, 2011, the Palestinian Public Prosecutor charged Abu Libdeh with corruption, on charges including breach of trust, fraud, insider trading and embezzlement of public funds.
